  • 90210 star Jennie Garth opened up about turning 50.
  • She has found herself in “a really cool space” after the milestone birthday.
  • “I honestly feel like I just turned 30; I’m so active and vibrant,” she said.

As someone who is permanently embedded in fans’ minds as 90210’s youthful Kelly Taylor, for Jennie Garth, aging is a bit of “a mental rollercoaster,” she recently told Yahoo! Life. More specifically, turning 50 was initially a hard pill to swallow, but now, she’s surprisingly content with the milestone.

“You do come into a really cool space at 50—a place of inner confidence and quiet, and it really feels good,” she explained. “I didn’t think it would feel this good, but it really does.”

In a May interview with New Beauty, she shared a similar sentiment about her most recent birthday. “It’s hard to describe, because every time you hit a milestone birthday, it’s another range of emotions. It used to be a lot more exciting. Now, it’s like, OK, let me figure this out,” she admitted. “But turning 50 isn’t what it used to be. I honestly feel like I just turned 30; I’m so active and vibrant and on-the-go all the time and juggling so many things. I think I’m balancing everything so much better now, so I’m very excited for my 50s.”

Two main factors that have kept her so exhilarated are movement and mental health care. The actress was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, in her 40s—which initially made her feel older than she was. “Everyone associates it with being older, but you can have arthritis at any age. It can affect anyone,” she told Yahoo! Life. To stay nimble, Garth is an avid golfer and does a lot of stretching, she told New Beauty.

Golf is a two-fold self-care practice for the What I Like About You star, who calls the sport “a mental game.” It, in combination with therapy and meditation, helps her stay mentally strong, especially having been in the spotlight for most of her life.

“I’ve been in therapy since I was in my early 20s,” she told Yahoo! Life. “I’ve learned so much about myself and how to take care of myself. When you do have mental issues, whatever they are, you really do feel like you’re alone. You feel like nobody else thinks the way you think, or has the struggles you have. But we all have the same struggles.”

She also does her best to limit her screen time. “You just get tired of seeing everybody’s perfect life, and it’s exhausting mentally,” she admitted. “It sucks your energy level and, in turn, is bad for you physically.”

It sounds like Garth really has this aging thing figured out. And it’s always refreshing to hear that the best is yet to come.
