The Duke Club represents the latest in a trio of private courses to arrive on the Dutch golfing scene. All prefixed by the definite article, The Dutch (2010, designer Colin Montgomerie) and The International (2012, Ian Woosnam) have now been joined by The Duke, which firmly targets a business clientele and the corporate golf market.
Laid out on easy-draining sandy soil, a former woodland nine-hole course (known as De Hooge Vorssel) was substantially revamped by Dutch course designer Alan Rijks. His redesign also included the addition of a much more open and linksy nine, to the west of the original nine. At times wooded, at others much more open, a degree of straight-hitting is demanded from the tee, especially on some of the tighter tree-lined holes.
Pick of the holes: the par-3 7th. Not unsurprisingly a hole that resembles the island green par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass is going to steal any show ... and so it does at The Duke.

The Duke golf course, with its impressive "Sir Edwin Luytens English-style" clubhouse and highly-rated restaurant, is owned by the Van Eerd family, also owners of Jumbo Supermarkets and a chain of golf shops, Jumbo Golfwereld (Golf World). The vision for The Duke is that of a high-end exclusive business golf club, targeted at Corporate members.
Apparently the club name is connected to the Dukes of 's-Hertogenbosch, who used this and the surrounding land for hunting deer and wild boar.
