Audacy — the second-largest radio broadcaster in the U.S. and owner of New York City's 1010 WINS — will slash nearly $1.7 billion of debt from its balance sheet through its restructuring plan, according to court papers.

But on April 19, 1965, Chaseman presented the new format to the world, and 1010 WINS became the nation's first successful all-news radio station. Stan Brooks was the news director when the station made the switch, and he was the driving force behind the format change.

New York City alternative rock station 92.3, which was once home to Howard Stern, will sign off on Oct. 27 as Audacy flips the format to News Radio 1010 WINS on the FM frequency.

The two all-news bastions each have their own different audience and focus. WINS has traditionally focused on New York's five boroughs while WCBS-AM has targeted the New York suburbs, including New Jersey and Connecticut, while offering more national and international coverage.
