What Are Maine Coons Like as Pets?

Maine Coons are known for fitting in with families of any size, kids and pets included. These gentle giants love social interactions, they’re cuddly, friendly, and a lot of fun.

Characteristics Maine Coons are know for includes:

Curious – What cat isn’t curious, right? Well, when you have a more curious than average cat that weighs around 15lbs, you’re going to know about it. Some good cat furniture is required to help keep them interested.

Chatty – If you like vocal cats, Maine Coons are happy to have a chat. They’re not as vocal as Siamese, but they’ll let you know when they want your attention.

Lovable – Who doesn’t want a lovable cat, right? These big fluffy fur balls are one of the most loving breeds, often happiest curling up next to you while you sleep, on your lap, or wherever else you are.

Size – Maine Coons are famous for being one of the largest domestic cat breeds, and holding the record for the largest cat. On average, male Maine Coons are around 13-18 lbs, and females are 8-12 lbs.

Fun – Most of all, Maine Coons are fun to play and interact with. If you’re looking for a new friend, you’ll find that in a Maine Coon.

How Much Does a Maine Coon Kitten Cost?

We have to keep budgets in mind when looking for exotic breeds. Maine Coons are generally not that rare or expensive, you can find most in the ballpark of $500-$1,500.

This can go up thousands for the rarer colors and kittens with a pedigree background, or course. It’s something to discuss with a breeder when you make contact with them.

How Much Does a Maine Coon Cat Cost?

I think we should all consider adopting an adult Maine Coon if we’re able to. There are always adult cats in need of a loving home.

You’ll pay a lot less, too, if budget is a concern. Most rescues and shelters will ask for just a donation or a small fee to cover their costs. It’s a rewarding thing to do, adopting a cat in need of a home.

TICA and CFA Certifications

You may have seen some breeders saying they are TICA and CFA certified. This is an extra stamp of approval that they registered their cats and are maintaining a high standard.

Here’s what these organizations mean:

The International Cat Association (TICA) is a major player in worldwide cat registries. Founded in 1967, TICA was created as an alternative to the American Cat Fanciers Association (which used mixed breeds to register their cats).

TICA is the world’s largest and oldest association for cat enthusiasts and breeders. It has over fifty years of experience in registering purebred cats from all over the world.

The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) is a non-profit, international organization devoted to the advancement of purebred cats through breeding, showing, and educational programs.

Founded in 1906, it is the largest purebred cat registry in North America. CFA has more than 300 affiliated clubs in North America and has offices on both coasts of the United States.

Caring for Your Maine Coon

The most obvious thing about Maine Coons when it comes to care or ‘maintenance’ is that they have a lot of fur.

Some more than others, but they’re a long-haired breed. If you want to avoid having hair all over your home, and some nightmare knots and tufts in their coats, you’ll need to brush your Maine Coon daily.

Before you sigh, it’s really not that difficult. You’ll need to keep a good brush or a brushing mitt nearby, and just simply spend a few minutes a day brushing your cat.

If you do this from an early age, your cat will be used to it and even enjoy it. It’s pretty much some free attention and fussing anyway, so it’s a win-win.

The next main consideration is exercise. Maine Coons need exercise, and if they don’t get it they’ll end up doing some destruction around your home – I can vouch for this.

Ideally, they need to have access to the outdoors. If this is not possible, then you’ll need to make time to play with them and provide some fun cat furniture like trees.

Other than playing, fun, and brushing, you just need all the basic essentials most cats need.

This means making fresh drinking water available at all times, feeding them good cat food designed for their stage of life, a few treats here and there, and some nice quiet spots to sleep.
